Brief history.
Following the evolution based on the early SW1 switcher, Electro-Motive Division presented this SW7 variant in 1949. Built in over 490 units through October 1949 and January 1951 essentially in EMD's power plant n.3 based in Cleveland, Ohio, the new switcher outwardly it wasn't very different from SW1, but featured a more streamlined hood without the "step" in front of the nose. Another difference was the presence of two exaust stacks on the roof. This design will be maintained on all future models that EMD will develop for this type of switcher locomotives. The early SW7 have cab windows with curved tops; these became rectangular after April 1950. SW7 was powered by a six cylinders EMD 567A engine developing 1.000 horsepower (early production) and, after 1950, the engine was the 12 cylinders variant with a power of 1.200 HP. The TR4 is a cow/colf version of the SW7.
The SW7 it had a very important role on the american railroads, used by all the main companies. Mainly used for switching in the huge yards, the switcher has always proven reliable and suitable for its tasks. Numerous U.S. railroads have put SW7 into service. Of these, the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central were the main users. All the locomotives were then incorporated into Penn Central and subsequently acquired by Conrail, which employed 128 units of the model. Today, dozens of these locomotives survive through the country with regional companies and industrial railways.
