The American railway (on the United States and Canada) marks a history that has lasted for about 200 years. The development of the railways in the early 19th century had a huge impact on society and the economy and it has generated rapid social and industrial expansion in all regions of the nations of North America. Railroading history in the United States is almost as old as the country itself, dating back to the mid-1820s.
The railroading in the United States has gone through moments of great splendor and periods of deep crisis, with bankruptcies and rebirths.
American trains were at their peak in the early 20th century, an era called the "Golden Age" of rail transport in North America. Only the pause due to the Great Crisis of 1929 interrupted a continuous expansion that led the American companies to the complete "dieselization" which took place between the end of the Fifties and the Sixties, when the entire steam traction was removed from service. In the following years and to this day only a few examples of the great and epic steam locomotives survive, while all the traction is based on diesel engines, with a small percentage of electric power.
Listed here below there are some of the main companies based on the U.S. east-side, starting with the largest US company that ever existed (Pennsylvania Railroad), continuing with its successors as Penn Central and Conrail and then with the other large railroads connected to them.
